Dempo look to Africans to fill in their foreign players’ slot

Having lost out on star striker Ranti Martins to Prayag United, the Goan side are on the lookout for top centre-forwards to make up for the vacant slot…

I-League champions Dempo SC have begun their hunt to sign foreign players for the upcoming season with several Africans set for a trial.

With Ranti Martins opting for Kolkata’s Prayag United given that the club has shown a lot of ambition by offering top salaries and with Koko Sakobo not having the best of seasons with Dempo SC, it was expected that the search for the foreign players would soon start.

Around four players have been identified, two from Nigeria and one from Cameroon and Ghana respectively.

Cameroon’s Nyeck Nyobe George Clement, who plies his trade in Indonesia, is one of the players whom coach Armando Colaco is eyeing to fill in the centre-back slot at his club.

“Clement is very experienced and has played in Europe (as a youngster at a junior level) besides having donned national colours,” Colaco informed Navhind Times.

Sunday Abayomi has been lined up to replace Ranti Martins with the former being a versatile player as the latter was as he can fill in the attacking midfielder’s role too apart from being a striker.

“I am told that Sunday is as good as Ranti if not better,” Colaco was quoted saying.

Oladipupo Razaq is another Nigerian striker who has been on the radar and will appear on trials for Dempo SC. Ghana’s Stephen Ofei, a central defender by trade, is also expected to undergo trials hoping to impress Colaco for a deal with the Goan club.

“We need players for all positions and Razaq is also known to be an effective striker,” Colaco mentioned.
