The former Mohun Bagan striker couldn’t hide his excitement at the prospect of playing for the ‘B’ side of Sporting Clube de Portugal…Sunil Chhetri believes that he needs to put in a lot of hard work in order to impress the coaches at Sporting Clube de Portugal if he harbours any hopes of extending his one year contract with the club further.
After having suffered the disappointment of a disaster move to Sporting Kansas City where he failed to break into the first team, let alone make an appearance for the MLS club, Chhetri is more than determined to make the most of the opportunity life has presented to him at this crucial juncture of his career.
"From 163rd (India's FIFA ranking) to playing in the 5th ranked nation in the world, its one opportunity I will never forget in my life," he was quoted saying.
“I will have to do a lot of hard work. I will leave no stone unturned, so that I don't regret later in my life. When I am 40, I don't want to feel that I could have done better," he added.
The 27 year old is expected to fly for the Iberian nation is about a fortnight’s time wherein he shall be handed a lesson as to where he stands in terms of football skills.
"I am excited. I want to see where do I stand...want to grab it with both hands. I can't let go this opportunity. The training facilities there are excellent. Now, I feel like a 14-year-old. I will not be Sunil Chhetri there,” he said rather animatedly.
