The treat for the young and old...

Eight Goan teams will compete in the second edition of the Goa Pro League 2010-11 which was officially unveiled at the Goa Marriott by Goa Football Association (GFA) on Thursday.

The state's top notch league will consist of 56 matches starting August 28 until mid-December which will be played in the double leg format. The team which finishes at the top of the table will be richer by Rs two lacs, while the second placed team would get half of the same amount.

On The Launch Pad

The inaugural match will be played between Churchill Brothers SC and Vasco SC at the Tilak Maidan on Saturday. Defending champions Dempo SC will feature in their first match of the season against the Sesa Football Academy senior squad on August 31st at the Duler ground in Mapusa.

Other teams include Salgaocar Sports Club, Sporting Clube de Goa, Goa Velha SC and Faria Sports Management.

Unlike the decision of All India Football Association (AIFF) to allow three of the four registered foreigners to play in the I-League, GFA Secretary Savio Messias has stated that only two foreigners will be allowed to play for each Goa Pro League team in order to promote local talent as also to bridge the gap between I-League and other clubs playing in the same league.

Besides, the Goa Pro League also practices what is now known as 'the U-20 rule' which Messias explained as, 'two U-20 players of a team should be played for a combined 90 minutes in a match.'

In another conscious attempt to pool in more spectators, Messais has also announced that senior citizens and students will be given free entry on producing valid identity cards at the stadiums. The matches are scheduled to kick off at 4:15 p.m.
