East Bengal duo Nirmal Chettri and Sanju Pradhan are in Gangtok to play a memorial match for coach Solomon Karthak. The duo were associated with the coach from 1999-2003 in the Namchi Sports Hostel, their youth academy.

The match, which takes place tomorrow, was originally scheduled to be held last year but could not take place due to the Sikkim elections. “We were originally scheduled to have the match in the memory of our coach last year. All the preparations were made but we could not have the match because of the Sikkim Elections”, says Nirmal Chettri.

They are joined by Bikash Jairu and Ravin Gurung from the ONGC team, and 5 boys from Sikkim police amongst many others.

“We couldn’t come for our coach’s funerals since we all are playing outside the city, so this match is a small tribute from all of us to our beloved coach”, claims Sanju Pradhan.

“Since all of us are home for the holidays, the ex-hostellers of the academy decided to have the match”, add Nirmal.

The coach had passed away on June 30 last year.
