AIFF President To Handle Bob Houghton Contract Issue
Big decisions from crucial meeting
By Goal.com India
The meeting which was attended by all the 18 Executive Committee members saw President Praful Patel preside over the proceedings.
The major decision that came out from the meeting was regarding the contract renewal of national team coach Bob Houghton. The Executive Committee has entrusted President Patel to handle the entire issue with Bob Houghton.
Mr. Patel ruled out all the rumours of the Englishman's resignation as he went on record saying that he himself had a word with Houghton to clear out the misunderstanding.
The president was quoted saying, "I myself spoke to Houghton a few days back and reports that he has resigned are completely baseless. He has certain issues (with the AIFF) as expressed by his agent. But that does not mean that he is no longer coach. He continues to be India coach and he will be there in the Asian Cup.
"The Executive Committee has authorised me to take appropriate steps (in the Houghton issue)."
AIFF also finally made it official that the national team players will not be available for the clubs from June to the the Asian Cup as a part of the Goal 2011 Project. The AIFF will pay each of the players 15% more than what they actually earn from their club for this special arrangement.
"We have decided to give contracts to 30 probables for the Asian Cup. They will be given salary on pro-rata basis with 15 per cent hike from their existing contract amount for the eight months from June to January next year,"
"In case of some players not getting accordingly (under their current contract), the AIFF will look into it but that will be on case by case basis," the president of the Indian FA was quoted saying to the media.
A discussion regarding an ambitious Youth Development project also took place during the meeting.
The players recruitment structure in the I-League remains the same as AIFF decided to continue with their current policy that allows all the teams to register three foreigners along with one additional Asian foreigner.
The Santosh Trophy will be played from the month of July in Kolkata meanwhile next season's I-League will kick start from the month of September.
The Indian FA has also decided to field their own team in the I-League which will be based in Delhi and shall consist of players from the India U-19 team.
Mr. Patel said, "An Under-19 team will be selected and they will play in the I-League from next season onwards. They will be given contract by the AIFF in a view to make it a team for the future say by 2014. The team will be based in Delhi and will have an international coach. We will start looking out for the coach."
