The (FPAI) Football Players Association of India got underway when football stars in India planned and thought of helping out fellow footballers in the country.

Since its inception, FPAI has been instrumental in doing various events starting from fund raising for former footballer VP Sathyan to a five a side football tournament involving top corporate houses in Kolkata and many more.

The latest in their kitty is the FPAI Awards. It is conceptualized at par with the FIFPRO awards structure. It will be the first time in India where the footballers will be voting for their fellow colleagues.

To generate the interest among the people, FPAI went a step further and involved the general public to vote for their favorite star online.

The award ceremony is stated to take place on Sunday with all the players flying down to Kolkata from the National Camp in Goa. National team Coach Bob Houghton is also expected to attend the event. Mumbai FC Coach Mr. David Booth has also confirmed his participation.

It was also learnt that a part of the dazzling award ceremony will include dance performances from Sunil Chhetri, Bhaichung Bhutia and Steven Dias. The trio will be choreographed by Sonia Jaffer,  Bhaichung’s partner in the reality show Jhalak Dikhla Jaa. The show will be hosted by a famous radio jockey of Kolkata.

FPAI Media Manager Arindam Basu told Goal.com,  "The preparation is at full swing. All the logistics are taken care of. We are hopeful that the ceremony will turn out to be a landmark event.”

The voting for People's Choice Footballer of the Year (2008-09) is still open. To caste your vote visit www.fpaofindia.com.
