It was back in June this year that the India was scrapped from the women's ranking by FIFA for their lack of activity on the international front. The players, coaches and those involved with women's football were horrified while the Indian FA opted go for a fresh start.

Women footballers have got a shot in the arm as American coach Mike Dickey has arrived in Goa to share his expertise with the women's coaches and players in a joint initiative by the US Soccer Federation and the Indian FA.

28 girls have reported to the national camp out of the 32 with several new players being inducted in the squad who are busy preparing for the SAFF Games.

"We are playing the SAFF Games for the first time and a medal would help instil the pride back in women's football," said senior player Oinam Bembem Devi.

It must be noted that the last international India played was back in October 2007 when they lost 4-1 to Iran in Teheran.

"We had a camp earlier in Rourkela sometime back and this is our second camp to prepare for the tournament," added Bembem

Having been neglected for long, the girls are geared up to prove a point that they can play after being ranked 11th in Asia and 50th in the world not so long ago. The women internationals believe that there has to be more tournaments for them as they don't get to play very often.

"We have the national women's tournament which goes on for a fortnight or so. Now a new tournament has started in Sikkim where eight teams participated. That's all that happens for us and it's essential that we get some exposure which shall help us improve our rankings and stature in world football," said Ronibala Chanu.
