The Goa Football association has threatened to sue the Sports authority of India if the Nehru stadium is allotted to Goa Cricket association for India’s One Day international against South Africa in February.
The Times Of India caught up the Goa Cricket Association secretary Prasad Phatarpekar who was adamant that it was fair for the GCA to ask for the ground , “We have several National tournaments which have to be played on substandard and poor surfaces. It will be good to play all our matches at Fatorda, The SAG has to give us preference since we are hosting National matches and not any club tournament,”
The GCA decision to seek possession of the ground will cause some tension between the two organizations as the GFA are insisting that they have booked the stadium from October 2009 to May 2010 and any such intrusion could hinder their I League and AFC Champions league campaigns.
Phatarpekar continues that they had originally booked the ground from February to March 2010 and since the Nehru stadium is not exclusively for football, the GFA has no right to question their intentions. “We had originally booked the stadium from February to March 2010 to host a ODI and no one is contesting this fact. Now that the dates are confirmed, we asked the SAG to shift our dates to January-February, but the GFA would have nothing of it. “
“The Nehru stadium is not exclusively for football. If the government believes that the ground must be used only for football, as the GFA claims, let the government acknowledge this on record”
Phatarpekar went on to take a dig at the enormous gulf between the revenue cricket and football generate, “I don’t understand why the GFA is making such a fuss. Afterall, they have to adjust only for 10 I-league games”
The GCA also bared the statistics backing their argument as the four football tournaments played here have contributed a mere 2.75 lakhs whereas the last time Goa hosted an ODI, the amount was 21 lakhs.
Dayanand Narvekar, the GCA president has been tight lipped about the whole issue and “ wait and watch” is all he had to say on the matter.
