The Football Players' Association of India (FPAI) announced the first FPAI Awards night on Saturday, with the event set to take place on December 13 in Kolkata.

Their are four categories in which awards will be given, namely, Best Young Player, Best Foreign Player, Best Indian Player, and Best Coach. The awards will be based on the performances of the nominees during the previous season, according to FPAI President Bhaichung Bhutia.

Interestingly, Bhaichung Bhutia has distanced himself from the awards, by not considering himself for the Best Indian Player category. Bhutia said, "Being FPAI President and a key member of its decision-making body, I should not be a part of it."

Bhutia also added that the FPAI had modelled the awards on the prestigious PFA Awards that are held every year in England. He added, "We have tried to model this on the English PFA as I was impressed with the help and guidance they gave me during my stay in England.

"Hopefully we could be as effective as the English PFA in the future."

The event is sure to catch many football lovers' attention, and hopefully, in due course, will grow and become as prestigious as its English equivalent.

The Nominees for the awards are as follows:

Best Coach: Karim Bencherifa, David Booth, Zoran Djordjevic

Best Indian Player: NS Manju (Mohun Bagan), Anthony Pereira (Dempo), Sunil Chhetri (Dempo)

Best Foreign Player: Odafa Okolie (Churchill Brothers), Jose Barreto (Mohun Bagan), Junior Obagbemiro (Sporting)

Best Young Player: Subhash Singh (East Bengal), Baljit Sahni (JCT), Rakesh Masih (Mohun Bagan)
