Four second half goals helped India beat Afghanistan 4-1 in a Group C encounter at Arbil, Iraq on Thursday evening.

After suffering three successive defeats, India were determined to win this match. They nearly took the lead in the 20th minute when Jeje Lalpekhlua’s effort found the woodwork.

A minute later Afghanistan opened the scoring through Mohammad Rahimi, who headed in a Ghulam Niazi cross from the right wing.

India were eager to get the equalizer and kept applying pressure for the rest of the first half with Lalrindika coming the closest in the 30th minute when his shot hit the bar.

Afghanistan held on to their one goal advantage till the halftime break but three minutes into the second period, India equalized through Malswamfela who rounded off a fine team move with a clinical finish.

India threatened to take the lead and finally achieved the same in the 62nd minute when they were awarded a penalty after Malswamfela was brought down in the box by Abdul Wakil. Skipper Jeje successfully converted the spot kick.

Five minutes later Malswamfela scored his second of the game with a powerful shot from just outside the box.

Jeje also got his second in the 83rd minute when a cross from Shouvik Das somehow found its way to the Indian captain, who easily found the back of the net.

In the other game of the group Afghanistan and Oman played out a goalless draw. India’s final game of the campaign is against Kuwait on Sunday.
