Goa League: When The Cops Had To Intervene A Football Match
In an example of poor behaviour by spectators and some bizarre officiating, the match between Goa Velha and Sesa Football Academy was called off with one minute to go. That's right, ONE minute...
The controversial and ugly match was tied 3-3 when referee Jayendra Nagvenkar decided to abandon the match with just a minute of added time left to be played. Nagvenkar was forced to abandon the match after Sesa goalkeeper Jason D’Mello protested against the poor light as he prepared to defend a Goa Velha freekick in an advantageous position.
Why the players and the referees couldn't carry on for one more minute remains a mystery, and that one more minute might have to be replayed later. Imagine both sets of players coming back to the ground on another day to play that one minute of football.
“I am awaiting reports from the match commissioner and the referee,” said Goa Football Association secretary Savio Messias.
According to rules, the remainder of the time -- one minute in this case -- has to be replayed, but the GFA is expected to rely heavily on match commissioner G Paul’s report.
The match had its own share of drama and problems as Goa Velha supporters, incensed by a refereeing decision to award Sesa FA a penalty, hurled chairs, bottles and even a helmet on the field!
The match had to be stopped for 28 minutes before police were called to restore order early in the first session. The match started on a promising note with Goa Velha taking the lead in the 12th minute after Augusto Monteiro’s reverse kick from inside the danger zone found the back of the Sesa net.
Sesa equalized through Savio Carneiro from the spot after Marcus Mascarenhas was brought down by Goa Velha captain Jayganesh Goltekar.
The decision did not go down well as Goa Velha players and supporters protested furiously, halting the match for close to half an hour. When the match resumed, Pratesh Shirodkar put Sesa ahead for the first time with a stunning 25-yarder.
Goa Velha fought their way back into the match, thanks to a Freddy Oliveira freekick which tied the match 2-2. In the second session, Freddy scored his second and the team’s third to raise visions of another famous win, but Sesa refused to throw in the towel and restored parity through the efforts of Marcus Mascarenhas, eight minutes from time.
In another match, Vasco Sports Club scored a stunning 7-0 win over Raia Sporting at Tilak Maidan, Vasco.
Vasco, who led by a solitary goal at the breather, had their Nigerian striker Koko Sakibo to thank for scoring a double hat-trick. Prajot N scored the other goal for Vasco as the local side grabbed their first win in the competition.
