After a disastrous start to the season, East Bengal have hit a new low when Edmilson Marques came close to punching his coach Subhash Bhowmick on Thursday morning...

After almost an hour of the training session, East Bengal squad was divided into two teams and therein began a practice game. Saheb Mondal tackled Edmilson on a couple of occasions and the physio, who doubled as the referee, failed to spot the foul.

A miffed Edmilson put in a double footed challenge on Mondal when the referee instantly blew his whistle which further frustrated the Brazilian only to kick the ball out of the field. Bhowmick sent Edmilson to the bench and when the stretching session began, the coach didn’t allow the player to join the group.

In a fit of fury, Edmilson rushed towards the coach and it was only due to the intervention of Saumik Dey that no blows were exchanged. Abuses were hurled at each other and a timely interference from skipper Syed Nabi to cool the coach calmed the matter temporarily.

However, the matter went to the dressing room where Edmilson reportedly beat Saumik and was also said to have spat on him.

When contacted Saumik over the incident, the defender gently brushed aside all such suggestions and said, “It was a footballing matter. There was nothing serious.”

Several players were said to be unhappy with the whole incident and the juniors told Goal.com that they wondered why they chose East Bengal over other clubs in the summer.

“We never knew these kind of things happen in big clubs. It’s absolutely crazy and the mood in the camp isn’t healthy,” said a player.

One wonders whether the Red and Gold’s are on their way to another tumultuous season ahead.
