Why Sporting Vice-President Backed Out Of Elections Tomorrow?

Sporting Clube De Goa vice-president, Victor Fernandes has withdrawn his nomination from the Jury of Appeal elections, which are to be held tomorrow when the Goa Football Association (GFA) is to have its Annual General Meeting (AGM).

The last date for withdrawal of nominations was on the seventh of this month, but Victor purposely choose to back out only 48 hours before the voting process would begin.

The following is what Victor has to say explaining the reasons for his unexpected back out.

"I am withdrawing from the contest for the post of member of Jury of Appeal of GFA. I had filed my nomination as it was my desire to serve the cause of the game in Goa.

"I have now realized that people with zero contribution to football have been made to contest by vested interests dissatisfied with the earlier Jury’s righteous decisions, and further have formed “panels”, and started lobbying, all of which has disgusted me.

"I stand firm in my belief that for the judicial posts of members of Jury of Appeal there is no place for even election as rightly pointed out by the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) team which inspected GFA recently, let alone lobbying, and forming panels of figure-heads.

"I did not deliberately withdraw on the last date set for withdrawal of nominations, as I realized that to do so at a later date would serve better purpose of passing on a message to the voting members of G.F.A.

"I request members of the GFA not to waste their votes on me, but instead to be vigilant and ensure that the highest Appeals body of G.F.A. is in safe hands. Beware of those whose motives are suspect. The Jury of Appeal, an august and upright body of the GFA, is under serious threat for the first time in the history of GFA as an attempt is being made to control it.

"I must say that the present Jury of Appeal has done a wonderful job, thus setting high standards of integrity and impartiality. Therefore, I cannot resist the temptation here, of pointing out that two members of the present Jury of Appeal, Mr. Albino Valles and Mr. Noel Lima Leitao are standing for re-election. Add one young legal mind like Advocate John Abreu Lobo or Advocate Mauro Menezes, and we have a new Jury of Appeal worthy of the high standards set by its predecessors. Please note that the above-named persons have not approached me for my support.

"I appeal to all voting members of the GFA to make it a point to exercise their right on the 19th of July to vote and to choose carefully candidates who have served well the cause of football and are not part of any lobbies or panels."
