The Deepak Mandal Issue One Of The Reasons For MB's Stand Against AIFF
One of the primary reasons of the stand-off between Kolkata clubs and the All India Football Federation (AIFF) is as to who shall take care of the wages if a player gets injured while on national duty. The incident which has, to some extent, prompted this move by the clubs was the Deepak Mandal issue...
The central defender hadn’t received his complete payment even after the completion of the I-League 2007-08 season. The AIFF general secretary, Alberto Colaco stated,” AIFF will see that Deepak does not suffer any monetary loss due to his injury in the ONGC Nehru Cup. This is a commitment given and it will be honoured.”
The commitment, indeed, was very much honoured by the AIFF and Mohun Bagan paid the rest of the sum a few days after. But Mohun Bagan general secretary, Anjan Mitra points that the Indian FA had paid only 50% of the due amount.
“When we signed Deepak, we paid him an advance of Rs.10 lakhs. Thereafter, he got injured and the AIFF said they shall see to it that his wages are taken care of.
“The AIFF changed its stance later, and paid only 50% of the due amount, which was Rs.5 lakhs. We had to pay Rs.5 lakhs, after paying 10 lakhs earlier, to respect his contract which was worth Rs.20 lakhs for that season.
“We paid Rs.15 lakhs in all for a player, who didn’t attend a single training session or match, due to his injury during the Nehru Cup,” pointed Mitra.
This time the club wants clarity as to who shall bear the brunt of the wages of an injured player, to avoid any altercation for future, according to Mitra.
