Al Wasl coach Diego Maradona has criticised his club's management for failing to fulfill its promise of recruiting six new players during the January transfer window.

Speaking after Saturday's dismal 3-0 Emirates Cup loss to Dubai SC, Maradona pointed the finger at the club hierarchy, having fielded a weakened side for the cup competition.

“The management did not make enough reinforcements to the squad, I was promised six new players but only two came," Maradona told reporters.

"Like we say in Argentina, we would like to bring out all meat from the fridge to serve it, but we were not able to.

“The reserve team played because we don’t have a great chance of qualifying for the next round.

"We wanted to rest the players who played a lot in the past, and focus on the league and Gulf Cup.

"Because of the lack of quality players we had to name a stronger bench than expected."

Al Wasl's only two signings this January were Iranian midfielder Mohammad Reza Khalatbari and Argentina international Juan Ignacio Mercier.
