JOHN TERRY
Club: Chelsea
Country:  England
Age: 28 (DOB December 7 1980)
Position: Defender
Previous Placings: None

Chelsea may have fallen short of domestic and European glory in 2009, but captain John Terry’s individual performances only served to enhance his reputation. The 28-year-old was voted UEFA Club Defender of the Year for the third time in five years, proving that among his peers he is regarded as the very best in the business.

Terry led England to a near-perfect qualification for the World Cup, and since signing a new contract at club level has been inspirational oncemore as Carlo Ancelotti’s men have soared to the summit of the Premier League and eased through the Champions League group stage.

Nevertheless, as one of just three defenders on the 30-man shortlist, and with no major trophy in his cabinet to point to, the 28-year-old might well accept that the odds of success this year are not in his favour.

Attributes
  • UEFA defender of the year (for the third time in five years)
  • Cemented status with club and country as one of game’s great leaders
  • Captained England to near-perfect World Cup qualification
  • Instrumental in Chelsea’s great start to current campaign
  • Missed out on all major trophies last season, only winning the FA Cup.

They Say…

“There is a word in Italy: 'trascinatore'. It means the player that pulls the group together. John Terry is a trascinatore at Chelsea,” Carlo Ancelotti, Daily Mail.

Prediction

A firm favourite with UEFA when it comes to awards, Terry will accept that it will be a surprise if he is similarly popular with the France Football voting panel.

The Englishman’s chances are restricted by Chelsea’s failure to win a major trophy, although his strong leadership with both club and country might make him an outside bet to be one of the top finishers from beyond Barcelona.
