It may only be pre-season but Oscar Bruzon, the Spanish coach of Sporting Clube de Goa, has already expressed his delight at the training and fitness levels of his players post a two month siesta.
"The first few days are all about affinity, making sure the new signings and young players are welcomed by the established players in the team," elucidated Bruzon, to The Herald, as he placed special emphasis on team building.
He went on to add, "After getting out the aerobic and anaerobic tests, I was pleased that all the players were around the same level of fitness."
Sporting Goa, or 'Flaming Oranje' as they are popularly referred to, had the joint-highest representation from amongst all I-League clubs in the Indian U-23 squad that went on an exposure tour to the Czech Republic, in preparation for upcoming Asian Games to be held in South Korea.
Keenan Almeida, Joyner Lourenco, Rowlin Borges, Ravi Kumar and Kamaljeet Singh all of whom represent Sporting Goa, donned the Indian jersey as well.
"The five players currently in the Indian U-23 team is proof that we are moving in the right direction and we must continue to work hard as a group to achieve more goals," enunciated the tactician.
This time however the focus will be on Bruzon's performance to win the team the I-League title that they have so far missed.
It may also be remembered that Sporting lost by a margin of 3 goals to 1 in the final of the Federation Cup, against arch rivals Churchill Brothers, while winning the Goa Super Cup.
Having retained top scorer Boima Karpeh, who scored 11 last term, the Goan club have signed Spanish defender Pablo Gallardo besides Creson Antao from Dempo, Souvik Das and Kamaljit Singh to name a few. They have said goodbye to Ogba Kalu, Valerio Rodrigues, Deepak Devrani and Dawson Fernandes to name a few.
"We are always looking to improve season upon season, making sure that the curve on the graph is pointing in the right direction. We have made some great signings in the summer and I can assure the fans that we will be very competitive," Oscar concluded.
