The Mariners notched up a win against a young Black & White side, with Balwant playing his first match.
The scoreline, however, was a bit flattering as they failed to strike a perfect chord for most of the match.
Mohun Bagan fielded a number of potential first team members in the starting line-up while Mohammedan's first eleven included many young players.
The Green and Maroon brigade took the lead early after Dhanachandra's cross was sent to Sabeeth by Jeje and the Keralaite striker did no mistake to send the ball home with a powerful header from the edge of the six-yard box.
However, the Black & Whites dominated the proceedings after conceding but squandered a few easy chances. Lalkamal Bhowmick and Yusa Katsumi were largely anonymous in the midfield. Balwant Singh also given a run-in in the second half.
The Mariners doubled their lead in the second half, when Moula's long ranger gave the Mohammedan goalkeeper little chance to stop it from going in.
Subhash Bhowmick acknowledged that his players performed poorly, but stressed that they will need more time to get accustomed to the astroturf.
"We have to practice in this artificial turf from now on. From next week, we will practice three days a week here. The boys failed to exhibit any passing football. However, we will have to keep in mind this is our first match on the artificial turf," he remarked.
He however told the media that he has never seen their latest recruit Sony Norde in action.
"I have not seen Sony play, not even in YouTube. But since there is so much discussion about him in Kolkata, I guess he will be a good signing," he said.
Mohun Bagan will now play a practice match against Dipendu Biswas's club from Basirhat on the last day of the month.
