Shillong Lajong edged past ten-men Mohammedan Sporting at the Salt Lake Stadium to do the double over the Kolkata outfit.
The north eastern side hasn’t had a great run in the I-League as they got relegated in their first year in top flight. In the last editions, they have finished in eleventh and tenth spot respectively. This season, they haven’t been involved in the relegation dogfight and are placed fifth on the table with a game to go.
“First of all I would like to make a statement. This is our best finish in the I-League so far. The biggest credit goes to my players. It’s essential that the referees have to be better. Officials have to also improve like players and teams,” he said.
He admitted that his side gave too much space for the opposition attackers to maneuver, but wanted his players to enjoy the win.
“We should be more compact in defense. Josimar is a great striker. There are areas to be improved there. I won't take away the happiness from my players,” he mentioned.
In his first full season as the head coach, Singto has done a commendable job at Lajong by ensuring that they finish in the top half of the table.
“Well. I think a coach is nothing without his players. They are the most important. There is still a long way to go for me personally. But I am happy in my first full season as the head coach.”
Singto stated that the missed penalty by Luciano Sobrosa proved costly for Mohammedan as thereafter Lajong scored two quick goals.
“The turning point was Luciano Sobrosa missing the penalty. If they went 4-3 ahead that could have been more difficult.”
Lajong are level on points with Dempo SC but are ahead in the standings due to a better head-to-head record having beaten them twice this term.
“Now we can aim for top five finish. We are level with Dempo on points but are ahead on head-to-head.”
