Dempo SC bounced back from their defeat to Salgaocar FC by edging past Mohammedan Sporting 1-0 last weekend.
Coach Arthur Papas was pleased with the effort of his players but mentioned that they could have closed the game as a contest in the first half itself.
“I’m extremely pleased. The character of the group, the desire to turn it around from the demoralizing loss (to Salgaocar), that was the biggest thing we talked about. Mohammedan Sporting were fighting for their lives at the moment. I am just happy for our boys as the intensity was good. I thought in the first half the game could have been finished already. Then of course the second half we came out and finished the game off. So I’m pleased for everyone,” said the former Pailan Arrows coach.
Dempo took the lead in the 77th minute when Clifford Miranda’s shot was saved by Luis Barreto only for Tolgay Ozbey to score on the rebound. Mohammedan coach Sanjoy Sen claimed that Ashim Biswas was injured when Miranda decided to initiate attack as opposed to putting the ball out of play.
“He (Sen) wants to talk about fair play. He should start looking at their goalkeeper (Barreto who spends more time on the ground than the grass. My team never wastes time, always plays to the referee’s whistle. Let’s not get into the fact that’s the reason game was lost. Then what’s the reason they have lost all the other games?” responded Papas.
Alwyn George didn’t have the best outing against Mohammedan although Papas came to his player’s defense.
“There are rare players in this county (India) who are talented in number 10 position. Also in this country they are very quick to put a lot of downside on young players.
“If you look at our list, our list has the most under 23 players than anyone in the league. Today there are 10 players in the team sheet. So I will never be criticising Alwyn. I think people should start to respect the player. He is learning and will get better. I am very happy with this guy,” he said.
