The Australian coach explained the reason why he didn’t start with Tolgay Ozbey against Salgaocar…
Arthur Papas was livid with his side’s display in their 2-0 defeat to Salgaocar FC on Wednesday in a round 21 I-League clash.
Dempo SC dominated the proceedings in terms of possession but weren’t able to penetrate the opposition’s defense, in particular in the first half.
“We had a lot of possession of the ball but not with purpose. We were going to have long periods of the ball, we knew this but it is what you do when you have the ball and the organisation when you lose the ball.
“The reaction when you lose the ball was not quick enough. That’s the big thing in the game. We lost a couple of battles in their forward line because of their two forwards (Dudu Omagbemi and Darryl Duffy). To be honest I think they were too good today,” he said.
Tolgay Ozbey was named on the bench by Papas and the coach explained his reason in bringing him on only in the second half after his side were trailing by two goals.
“I’m happy that he got through 45 minutes because he has trained only once in the last ten days. He had a bit of a knock in the first session after the Sporting (Clube de Goa) game. Only yesterday he attended his first full session. Even at half time I was apprehensive to bring him on because I’m trying to think about the next game as well.
“But when it was 2-0, we got to need someone to who actually wants to make runs in behind. So he is not dropped because of poor performance.”
Dempo midfielders punted in several crosses but not many of them reached their intended target. Papas explained why his side failed to utilize width of the Jawaharlal Nehru Stadium.
“We spoke about that in first half. I think I counted about 8 crosses in a 60 minute period. First of all the crosses did have not much of quality on them. They were lifting too high and weren’t really hitting their targets. The second point is we weren’t getting enough bodies in the box. It’s a combination.”
Karanjit Singh made several spectacular saves to keep his side’s two-goal lead intact and was thereby named as the man of the match.
“Well their keeper [Karanjit] gets man of the match and we lose 2-0, I think that tells you the story. Full credit to Salgaocar because that is how they play, this was not a new game that we saw today from them. We know they can absorb the pressure; they can hit teams on the counter attack. They were better, and at the end of the day they deserve victory.”
