The Flaming Oranje’s hopes of winning their maiden league title suffered as they failed to pick three points yet again…
Sporting Clube de Goa’s title hopes took a beating as they only picked a point against Mumbai FC in a home fixture last weekend.
In their last four fixtures in the I-League, they have only garnered two points from a possible twelve. They are placed fourth on the league table with 29 points from 18 matches, eight points adrift Bengaluru FC on top who have played a game more.
“If you go to see, mathematically we also have a chance. We are going to take one match at a time. We are going to face Mohun Bagan next. Definitely, our boys know the importance of the future matches also. If we want to finish in the top three, we have to work hard and I'm sure that the boys will give their best.
“Still we are hoping (of winning the title),” said assistant coach Nobert Gonsalves.
Sporting will hope to have Beevan D’Mello and Victorino Fernandes fit for their next match as Gonsalves was forced to substitute them in the second half.
“We had high hopes on them, but during the course of the match the players complained of pain. So we didn't want to aggravate the injuries. That's why we substituted them,” he explained.
Mumbai FC found their way back into the game as scored the equalizer in the second half after having gone down in the first half through Boima Karpeh’s penalty-kick.
“According to me, our boys have given their best and we equally respected the opponent team. Of course, we should have put extra efforts, but we conceded that goal due to lack of concentration. We were able to control the game in the second half and we implemented our game as per plan.”
The visitors could have scored the winner as they dominated the proceedings for long periods in the second half.
“It (chances) was equal for both sides, I can say. We also had a couple of chances, but somehow we fumbled in the scoring area,” he said.
