The Goan coach admitted that his team are in contention for the league title after registering a 2-0 win over Mumbai FC…

Salgaocar FC are on 30 points from 18 matches in the I-League. With six matches to go, they are only four points behind league leaders Bengaluru FC.

The Greens play five of their six matches in Goa while Bengaluru FC have just a game at home.

Following the 2-0 victory over Mumbai FC, Salgaocar FC coach Derrick Pereira stated that if his side can win the next couple of games, they do stand a realistic chance of winning the league.

“We need to keep winning. The way we are going about and God willing if we win a couple of more matches, then yes chances (to win the title) are there. Also, as I said before, we have to wait and see the results of the other teams. It all depends on other teams' results as well, which I knew [that] they would drop points.

“We [Salgaocar] need to keep going and the boys are playing with confidence. I'm happy with the way we defend deep and do not give much space to the opponents. Going forward, Dudu [Omagbemi] and [Darryl] Duffy are doing well. I'm happy that Gilbert [Oliveira] scored today. I'm happy that we got this victory,” he said.

One of the aspects of Salgaocar’s style of play is to defend after taking the lead. Pereira explained the reason why they have adopted this approach and look for openings on the counter.

“That's the way we have adopted this style because we have to play according to our strengths. That's what we do and look for the openings in the opponent's defense.

“The first goal really gave us that chance to open up their defense. Otherwise their (Mumbai FC’s) defense is quite strong. They play deep and do not give much space in the back. The goal opened up their whole defense. We could go forward and we created some good chances.”
