The coach of the Kolkata outfit was pleased with the effort of his players despite losing the tie...
Mohammedan Sporting were handed a 1-0 defeat at the hands of Salgaocar FC on Saturday courtesy of a goal by Dudu Omagbemi.
Kolkata clubs, when compared to other teams in the country have a cramped schedule as they ply their trade in various tournaments such as the Durand Cup, IFA Shield and the Kolkata League apart from the I-League and the Federation Cup. Sanjoy Sen pointed this as one of the important reasons as to why the clubs from West Bengal aren’t able to perform well in the I-League.
“The Kolkata clubs are the biggest sufferers. We have to play every tournament while other teams start fresh. Then we can't tell these things, since they sound like excuses. So, it's better for us to focus on the next match,” said Sen.
However he was pleased to see that his players mustered a fight until the end to score the equalizer which evaded them.
“I am proud with the way the boys fought especially after going a goal down. The match was live on television and everybody could see what we have done after conceding. I have not been with the club from the start of the season, but after the match, the players were telling me that so many chances have never been created in a single game this season.
“In the last match against Pune FC, fatigue was a factor. Even a player like Luciano (Sobrosa) failed to reach the ball on those days. However, I don't think it was a factor today. Derrick (Pereira) is an experienced coach and maybe he has seen something, but to me, today's effort was very satisfying.”
Mohammedan Sporting have a mere 13 points from the 15 matches played and are embroiled in a battle to survive until the end of the season.
“We are under pressure now and have to perform well. The comeback should start from the Sporting Clube de Goa match itself. I don't think any better football can be played after going a goal down. When we were winning, many negatives went unnoticed. A loss can take those things out. Our second half performance was outstanding.”
“Josimar i(Martins) is the highest scorer of the league even in this goal drought of the team. This also tells something about the standard of the league. In other leagues, you have to score at least 15 goals to be the highest scorer after 15 matches. But here he has scored only nine and sits on the top. This actually implies something,” he mentioned.
