Salgaocar moved to fifth place in the I-League just two points off fourth with a narrow 1-0 victory over the Mariners. We look at the top and the flop...Welcome to Goal's new I-League feature: Top and Flop. For every game, a candidate will be put forward, as chosen by Goal, who deserves recognition for achieving something special. It won't necessarily be the best player in the league - but whoever we nominate will have done something amazing. In the same vein, we will also name a player whose performance wasn’t up to the mark on the given day and eventually came to hurt his side.
|TOP: MATTHEW FOSCHINI
The Australian defender was the pick of the Salgaocar players . Leave alone his resolute defending, most of Salgaocar’s attacking play was initiated by Foschini from the back. He set up Daryl Duffy with a delightful pass early in the first half which the striker somehow squandered. There were a couple of occasions where he himself got into good attacking positions. He had a ferocious shot on goal only to be denied by a diving Shilton Paul in the 36thminute. It was his lobbed pass to Gilbert Oliviera that eventually fell to Dudu to score the all-important goal of the game. He was solid at the back as well keeping a well-deserved clean sheet.
|FLOP: PANKAJ MOULA
The striker seemed to be absent during the entirety of the match leading to Mohun Bagan failing to open their account. He was lacking ideas whenever he had the ball and could not build any meaningful attack. He was replaced by Ram Malik on the hour mark.
