With the I-League title out of sight, Mariano Dias has confirmed that his side will be aiming to win their maiden Federation Cup title...
Churchill Brothers SC beat Mohammedan Sporting 3-1 on Sunday to register only their second victory in the 13 matches they have played.
Lenny Rodrigues (51') and Jaison Vales (71') put the hosts 2-0 up before a penalty from Balwant Singh (74') confirmed full points for the hosts. Ashim Biswas scored a consolation goal for the visitors in the 86th minute.
"I think we started in a positive way and continued till the end. This is the first time, you can say, that we played as a team. Whatever they did was all right," said Mariano Dias, the coach of the Red Machines coach.
Both teams were locked at 0-0 at half-time until Dias introduced Jaison Vales who made the difference to Churchill's attack in the second half.
"There was a lot of movement on the [left] wing and we created a lot of chances as well. We could have won by a minimum of six goals," commented the Churchill gaffer.
"If we continue playing this way and score the chances that we create, definitely we will finish in a better position," he added.
Churchill Brothers have to wait until the New Year to resume their battle in the I-League as their matches which were to be held on 18 and 22 December have been postponed.
Going into the break, Dias mentioned, "Now we have a four days break before we start preparing for the Federation Cup where we play our first match on the 15th [of January, 2014].
On being asked if Churchill would play with their first team in Federation Cup, Dias said, "Of course as at least we know that we are aiming for the Federation Cup. The club has never won [this tournament]."
Churchill Brothers have completed the signing of Trinidad and Tobago international Anthony Wolfe who had represented his country at the 2006 World Cup. However, the 29-year-old will be available for his new club from January next year.
"He (Wolfe) has to get his employment visa. So he'll join us very soon. He will be in the Federation Cup," Dias confirmed.
