Shillong Lajong FC were handed a 5-1 thrashing by Sporting Clube de Goa at the Duler stadium in a round 15 match of the I-League. This was in stark contrast to Lajong's earlier victories against Dempo SC and Churchill Brothers SC on Goan soil.
Ogba Kalu bagged a hat-trick (26', 59' 67') while Boima Karpeh (65') and Victorino Fernandes (90+3') also struck for the hosts after the away side had taken the lead in the 14th minute through Taisuke Matsugae.
Thangboi Singto, Lajong coach, said, "[it was] very disappointing that we lost after scoring first and maintaining a 1-1 score in the first half. Full credit goes to Sporting Goa. They were a much better team, especially in the second half.
"We (Lajong) were really outplayed by a team who want to win more and ran an extra mile than us. They were hungrier to win the match."
The 39 year-old spoke of the impact of injuries to his key players but was quick to rebut against making any excuses.
"My centre-back and captain (Minchol Son) came back from an injury, but I don't think he was a 100 percent. He missed two matches because of an ankle injury. That's not an excuse, because when a player plays he has to perform. But overall, I don't blame any player. It's a team that lost in the second half.
"I think they (Sporting) should have been ahead by one or two goals [in the first half], but at the moment we are also missing one of our strikers - that is, our Brazilian, Uilliams [Bomfin da Silva] who is injured. With the same team we won against Churchill [Brothers]. So a win is a win. Today (Saturday) we were beaten by a much better team."
"[Cornell] Glen is not 100 percent fit. And the heat factor - it's not an excuse, but whenever Lajong play in Goa and against Sporting Goa, we always have a tough time. We have to give credit to them (Sporting) - good coach (Oscar Bruzon), good organization and good players."
"We have to do much better in the next match (against Dempo SC)," Singto concluded.
