The game ended in a goalless draw but it could have been worse for East Bengal if not for Gurpreet Singh's efforts in goal...Welcome to Goal's new I-League feature: Top and Flop. For every game, a candidate will be put forward, as chosen by Goal, who deserves recognition for achieving something special. It won't necessarily be the best player in the league - but whoever we nominate will have done something amazing. In the same vein, we will also name a player whose performance wasn’t up to the mark on the given day and eventually came to hurt his side.
|TOP: GURPREET SINGH SANDHU
The 21-year-old had an excellent day between the sticks against Salgaocar FC in which the goalkeeper dived low to his right to block Matthew Foschini's powerful spot-kick in the 25th minute. He also produced an outstretched left arm to keep out Darryl Duffy's shot and pulled off a reflex save to deny the Scot a second time late in the match.
The East Bengal custodian ensured a point for his side in a match that was dominated by the hosts for the most part.
|FLOP: MILAGRES GONSALVES
He was brought in as a substitute in place of Karma Tsewang, who got injured in the seventh minute, and was involved in a couple of attacking moves immediately as he saw his shot being saved by Gurpreet and created an opportunity for Francis Fernandes who couldn’t jump high enough to meet his cross.
Milagres was however taken off by Derrick Pereira in the 79th minute after the Salgaocar striker was guilty of ineffectiveness including an opportunity inside the box in which the Goan tapped the ball straight towards Gurwinder Singh.
