The Shillong Lajong gaffer was jubilant after his side overcame the challenge from the Greens of Goa, praised his side’s depth in quality...
Thangboi Singto, the Shillong Lajong boss, was ecstatic after his side earned a 2-1 victory over title chasers Salgaocar FC, thanks to goals in the 22nd and 37th minutes from Seikhohao Tuboi and Singam Subash Singh respectively, despite them missing three of their four foreigners. Though, Salgaocar mustered a response from Daryll Duffy, the home side's defense hung on to claim a rare victory at home.
“It was a very special win and a big credit goes to the players. We can’t be too happy about it. There are areas where we lack and we need to keep working on that. But again forgetting about other things, today’s win and in spite missing Cornell Glen, Minchol Son and Bomfim Uilliams, the other boys, especially the local boys did great. So, it gives me an extra motivation that I can play anyone at any time. So, that’s the luxury at the moment,” elucidated Singto, clearly impressed with his side’s performance.
“I told them to go and enjoy the game. I told them not to worry about the result or the fans because that raises the pressure as out of eight games, we have only won one at home. So I explained that ‘guys this is our bread and butter. But if you don’t enjoy what you do, it’s difficult. So go and play your mind but stick to the plan and fight as a team. Attack as a team and defend as a team.’ That’s what they did today and ultimately they got the result,” explained the Lajong coach on his side’s preparation for the game.
Concluding the interview, Singto was asked to reveal the confidence that was flowing through his squad presently and how his players managed to cope despite missing three of the four foreigners in his squad. Thoughtfully opined Singto stating, “I think anybody raised in the I-League has to perform and they have to believe in themselves. I think they’re good enough and that’s why they’re there in the I-League and in the team. I think all the Lajong players have been raised in the I-League, that’s why they are good enough. It’s good to know that we don’t rely on one or two players to score goals.
"Now we have goals from Boithang (Haokip), Taisuke (Matsugae) and from Uilliams as well as from Tuboi and Subash. So that’s great that any player who comes in, we can rely on a goal from him. That’s a good sign indeed.”
