Despite being the top-scoring side in the league with 18 goals, Salgaocar failed to find the back of the net on Sunday...
Salgaocar FC suffered their second successive loss and the third in the season after going down 0-1 to Sporting Clube de Goa in a round 12 I-League clash. The other two defeats were against Bengaluru FC in the previous game week and Mohun Bagan in round 6.
Derrick Pereira, the Green and Whites' coach, was understandably disappointed after Sunday's result in the Goan derby and put the blame on his defense.
"It was a disappointing performance and a disappointing all over approach towards the game especially as my defense lacked that confidence. Somehow they were found wanting and I think they were the main reason why we could not function," he said.
"Also, I feel that Francis [Fernandes] needs a break, because he is over-worked. He didn't get any break in between as he played for the [Indian] national team. So I think he needs rest for some time."
With Claude Gnakpa released by the club, Pereira revealed that he will be looking to sign a striker in the number ten mould.
"We need reinforcements and we need to strengthen our bench strength. We need to make some changes to the squad. For sure, we will be looking for a striker or someone who can play behind the striker in my system. Hopefully, if we get a good player then we'll go for him, or else we'll wait till the January transfer window," he mentioned.
The 51-year-old, however, stated that he has not lost faith in his team to come good but wants his squad to give a positive reaction to the defeat.
"I have faith. I believe in this team. We just got to get our act right. We have messed up, especially upfront, scoring goals. So we need to sharpen our finishing. We have been creating chances, but [Darryl] Duffy is the only guy who has been scoring. Of course, others have contributed in between, but we need somebody up front who can do the job.
"Today (Sunday) was the first match when we didn't score a goal," Pereira signed out.
