Mariano Dias: Our plan was to counterattack Sporting

The Goan coach heaved a sigh of relief after Churchill Brothers registered their first victory in the 2013-14 I-League season…

Mariano Dias stated that the 3-2 win over Sporting Clube de Goa will boost their confidence given that they have remained winless in their last nine I-League games.

“We played well. We scored in the very first minute and that gave us confidence. We carried on and scored the second goal as well. But we had many, many scoring opportunities in the first half. Balwant (Singh) had chances, someone else had chances. Yes, after all final the wait is finally over and we have come.

“It is a big relief because this is the tenth match after the start of the I-League and after these three points l the boys will get the confidence which is very, very important and hope we continue winning as without a win, there is nothing. So only a win will do.”

The new signings of Churchill Brothers, namely Yaser Shahen, Abdelhamid Shabana and Naser Al Sebai, gave a good account of themselves which played a big part in their victory.

“Yes, in fact, they contributed a lot especially (Abdelhamid) Shabana and Yasser (Shahen). They made a lot of difference in attack and Naser (Al Sebai) who just played his first game in defense. He’s played at that level but I hope he will adjust and get confidence with a few more games.

The Flaming Oranje enjoyed possession for most of the game but weren’t always threatening as their opponents who relied on quick counterattacks using the pace of Shabana, Shahen and Balwant.

“That was our tactic. We planned to allow Sporting to come into our own half. Win the ball and counter. We did very well in the first half. But in the second half, there were plenty of missed passes. But what is important is the win.

“We had been under pressure even after leading 2-1 as we still had a fear that we’d lose. But yes, we came good and our strategy of counter-attacking worked. We hope to get more wins and keep delivering good news.”
