With East Bengal trailing Sporting clube de Goa by a solitary goal, it was skipper Mehtab Hossain who came to the rescue of the Red and Golds with an expertly taken free-kick in the dying minutes which earned them a goal after sneaking into the net having taken a deflection off Gonzalo Hinojal.
On being asked whether this was a hard battle, Mehtab was straightforward in accepting that Sporting were in good form off late and this being an away match, a point was good enough
"Obviously it was a tough match. We got one point. Thank the Gods. We could have also won it. A point is very essential since this is an away match and we were trailing till the end."
Mehtab was quick to accept that East Bengal being profligate in front of goal was the reason for their indifferent results as they have never been shy of creating chances. By his own reckoning, this is primarily the reason that is blocking their progress to the top of the table.
"We are creating many chances but we are not getting goals. We are missing a lot of chances. This lack of conversion is certainly hindering our progress to the top of the table."
The tenacious midfielder was hopeful that the upcoming break would do his team good and accepted that they were struggling.
"This year we are struggling. We are inconsistent. We have two weeks gap which will help us."
Mehtab signed off by saying that the gruelling schedule of playing one home match and then an away game was certainly not helping their cause.
"We are struggling in the I-League as we have to play one match at home and then we have to travel to play an away match."
