Matthew Foschini signs for Salgaocar FC

The Australian’s signing completes the set of four foreign players for the Goan club…

Salgaocar FC have roped in Matthew Foschini in the Asian foreign player slot which was to be filled in after Seiji Sato was released.

The Goan club had earlier signed the Japanese but the player couldn’t recover from an ankle injury before the start of the I-League season and was thereafter released.

Derrick Pereira had earlier revealed to Goal of his intention to sign a defensive midfielder who would form one of the ‘two’ in a 4-2-3-1 formation he deploys.

“I am very excited about joining this great club and cannot wait to begin playing and hopefully this is the start of a very successful time for the club and myself,” Matthew Foschini told Salgaocar’s official website.

The 23-year was with Melbourne Victory between 2009-13 seasons and made 42 appearances but never really became a first choice. He was primarily used as a right back and a centre-back Down Under.

“He is a young player and eager to learn. He’s a versatile player who can in various positions and he'll fit well with the team,” said coach Derrick Pereira.

The player was said to have undergone a three-day trial in Kolkata where the Greens were preparing for the tie against East Bengal on Friday.
