The Salgaocar FC coach conceded that it wasn’t the most effective performance from his side against the Mariners…
Derrick Pereira, the Salgaocar coach, believes that his team couldn’t adapt to the pitch at the Salt Lake Stadium, Kolkata as they played the game against Mohun Bagan not having had the chance to practice on the said venue.
Salgaocar suffered their first defeat in the I-League as Bagan downed them 2-1 on Wednesday.
“I was analysisng the game and when going forward we didn’t combine well. We lost the ball in the attacking third quite often. I felt that the lack of practice on the pitch was the reason for this. The bounce was a bit awkward. We didn’t practice once as there was an East Bengal game in the AFC Cup a day prior to our match. We could have put pressure on Mohun Bagan,” he explained.
“In the second half, there was a lapse in concentration for the first goal and the misunderstanding between Karanjit (Singh) and Nicolau (Colaco). Karanjit was also out of his line and Nicolau didn’t judge the ball well. Although we had some good chances, there was a good save made by Shilton Paul after we conceded. We could have done better. It was not our day,” he added.
Pereira has spoken of his desire to add players in certain areas in order to strengthen his side further.
We are trying to get in players…the sooner the better. I am trying to get players whether from Pailan or wherever Indian players are available who have got some experience. Hopefully we can get some. I want a left sided player, primarily a left back. We are also looking for a quality foreign player to be one of the ‘two’ in our 4-2-3-1 formation,” he said.
The former Pune FC coach mentioned that fixtures in the I-League could have been better scheduled as it doesn’t allow the players enough recovery time.
“I think once Mumbai Tigers had withdrawn, I think they could have rescheduled the fixtures which would have given more time to the teams for recovery of the players. Instead of just cancelling their games, had we rescheduled, I feel we could have had more time overall.”
