Karim Bencherifa: I take full responsibility for Bagan’s poor form

The Moroccan coach seemed to have run out of excuses as his team failed to deliver the goods against the Flaming Oranje…

What was apparent all through the summer became factual on Saturday evening. Mohun Bagan are overly dependent on Odafa Okolie for goals and time has run out for coach Karim Bencherifa from shying away from admitting the same. For the record, Bagan have only scored two goals, one from the spot, in their four matches.

Following the 2-1 defeat at the hands of Sporting Clube de Goa, Bencherifa once again reiterated that his side created openings but didn’t convert them; a stance which has been maintained and consistent in all of their games.

“We created quite a few chances initially, enough to kill the game. But, now that does not matter because we did not get any point,” he said. “I take full responsibility and I have no excuses.”

On being pressed as to whether he was contemplating to resign given the club’s poor run of form this term, he replied saying, “When the team does not do well that though is always on the back of the coach’s mind. But, that surely does not mean I am going to put in my papers tomorrow. We will fight. I have taken this challenge and will try to do whatever I can to bring Bagan back on the winning track.”

The supporters of Mohun Bagan were seen mocking the club officials and also staged a small protest in front of the team bus in the aftermath of the result.

“The supporters have all the right to be angry because they want Bagan to be at the top. A lot of people will be disappointed today.”

Their next challenge is to face an in-form Salgaocar FC in Goa and should they fail to get a positive result, there are chances that the coach maybe given the boot. However it is likely that Odafa will be back in contention for the game but Bencherifa doesn’t want to dwell too much on it.

“Please don’t put too much pressure on Odafa. He is a human being and will be coming back from an injury,” he mentioned.
