Dempo Sports Club notched up an impressive 3-1 victory against continental high-fliers East Bengal in an I-League match in Kalyani.
This was the first victory in five matches for Dempo and Arthur Papas, the new coach of the Goan side looked relieved.
"The early goal gave us an advantage. East Bengal missing out the penalty (by Chidi Edeh) was also a turning point," Papas remarked after the match.
"We won because we played well today," he mentioned.
The Australian explained his side’s poor start to the I-League as never in the history of the competition have the club suffered the ignominy of not having won any of their opening four games.
"The team was in bad form and losing when I took over. It took me these matches to settle in and the players to gel. We will be getting results like you saw (against East Bengal)," he sent a warning to other teams who are yet to face them this term.
The former Arrows coach was however not critical of the opponents, whom he had tagged as favourites to win the league a couple of days ago.
"East Bengal should not be criticised. They are one of the contenders of the title. We should be with East Bengal as they are playing in such an important tournament like AFC Cup," he said as the Red and Gold are set to face Kuwait SC in the AFC Cup semifinal clash next Tuesday.
Papas was vocal about the misconduct by the East Bengal fans as a firecracker was thrown towards Dempo right-back Samir Naik when the footballer was to take a throw-in in the second half.
"Players should be given more protection by the Federation. These kinds of incidents cannot be condoned," he signed off.
