After a poor start to their i-League campaign, Dempo SC registered their first victory as they downed East Bengal 3-1 at the Kalyani Stadium on Thursday.

Clifford Miranda opened the scoring in the third minute and the lead was doubled after the break by Beto. Uga Okpara was sent-off for a foul inside the box and Beto stepped up to make it 3-0. Baljit Sahni managed to pull one back for the home side in the 85th minute with the final score reading 3-1.

“This can be the turning point to the season. There is nothing better than winning against East Bengal in Kolkata. This can change our luck in the league,” Beto told Goal.

Having scored twice, the Brazilian wants to help the club go top of the table in the coming weeks as they sprung back into form.

“It’s my aim to be the top scorer in the league, but when I play I only think about the team. For the moment I am only thinking of getting Dempo to the top of the league. I hope this victory could be the turning point for us,” he mentioned.

Beto stated that the players were determined to get a positive result against the Red and Gold as they literally outplayed their opponents.

“We got together before the game and we all had only one aim in mind and that was to win the game; and we did it. We attacked together, we defended together and everything went our way. The main thing is that we managed to get the three points,” he said.

A firecracker was thrown from the stands towards Samir Naik as he prepared to take a throw-in. Match commissioner Rizwan ul-Haq has taken a note of the incident and will be reporting the matter to the All India Football Federation (AIFF). Beto called for a strong action to be taken against the unruly elements in order to best avoid such incidences in future.

“This is not happening for the first time and the federation needs to look into this matter. We are thankful to God that nothing serious happened to our players, but we cannot wait for something bad to happen,” he opined.
