Dempo SC battled back in the second half to hold Salgaocar FC to a 1-1 draw in an I-League round four match played at the Duler Stadium in Mapusa, Goa, on Wednesday.
Darryl Duffy gave Derrick Pereira's side the lead in the 40th minute, but Jeje Lalpekhlua cancelled Salgaocar's advantage with a strike in the 81st minute.
"We (Dempo) conceded an early goal but we came back strongly in the second half. In the first half Salgaocar dominated, I agree with that. Second half, we dominated...the total 45 minutes with chances also," said Afonso after securing a point from the tie.
"Overall, [it was a] good performance by the team, especially in the second half. This is our away match. So getting a point in our away match is a good thing," added the Dempo assistant who was in-charge of the team in the absense of head coach Arthur Papas for the second straight game.
Afonso acknowledged the contribution of his striker Jeje Lalpekhlua, who scored the equaliser in the second half, and defended his decision of not making a single substitution.
"Yes (no substitutions), because I could not do," he said. "Everybody was playing so well. Unnecessarily why to substitute. If I had to make a change and the substitution had to fail, then I'm in trouble. So what I thought is [that] there was no need for substitution."
