I-League Team of the Week 3: Solid defenses rule this gameweek

Goal recaps all the action from week three of the I-League and chooses a team from among the best performers...

Gameweek three was one where tight defenses ruled, as all the four teams that registered a win during this matchday, kept a cleansheet.

It didn’t start that way of course, as Dempo SC and Rangdajied United scored four goals between themselves, before settling for a 2-2 draw. The points shared meant the hosts opened their account in this season’s I-League, while Dempo are still looking for their first win.

But they are still doing better than their fellow Goan outfit Churchill Brothers, who slumped to a 2-0 loss against Mumbai FC. The I-League champions need to pull up their socks, as their performances so far have been uninspiring, and they were completely outplayed by Khalid Jamil’s side, who have started the season impressively.

The same could also be said about Salgaocar, who have looked the pick of the sides from Goa this season. They brushed aside Mohammedan Sporting, recording a comfortable 3-0 win. Derrick Pereira has re-built the side in his image, of being a team which is efficient in attack and hard to get past in defense, as evidenced by the fact that they are yet to concede a goal.

Sporting Clube de Goa meanwhile finally kickstarted their campaign with a good 1-0 away win against Shillong Lajong. Oscar Barreras side had looked unconvincing so far this season, but this performance will have given him plenty of positives. Lajong didn’t help themselves, as play had to be stopped due to faulty floodlights mid-way through the second half, halting their building momentum, and giving the Flaming Oranje some respite.

Bengaluru FC are having a great start to the season, and now sit top of the table in their inaugural season in the I-League. Ashley Westwood has built a robust side which is perhaps one of the fittest units in the championship. Up against a tiring United SC, they registered a 1-0 win, which shall have sent their vociferous supporters back home in good spirits.
