Salgaocar coach Derrick Pereira urges his strikers to be clinical in their finishing

The 51-year-old is satisfied with the three points but urged his strikers to improve on their finishing, while looking to sign a new midfielder in the coming week...
Salgaocar FC edged past defending champions Churchill Brothers 1-0 on the opening matchday of the I-League 2013-14 in Goa, on Saturday.

Although his side got the three points, thanks to a first half strike by Darryl Duffy, Derrick Pereira feels that his strikers are yet to show their best performance on the field of play.

"We must thank and praise God for these three points. It was much needed for a start. It will definitely give us confidence to go forward," he stated during the post-match media address.

"Being the first match, it's always tough on the players and we lack a little bit of understanding upfront. Otherwise, [I am] very happy with the performance. We kept the shape well. Although we could have done better, I'm happy that we played well and got these three points."

Salgaocar have a break of two weeks before they face Mohammedan Sporting on Sunday, October 6, during which the Green and Whites will be looking to replace injured midfielder Seiji Saito.

"We have asked for a midfielder. Two players will be coming for trials in the coming week and [then] we'll take a call," Pereira mentioned.

The former Pune FC coach also admitted that his forward pair of Darryl Duffy and Claude Gnakpa will have to step up their game.

"For the next match, we'll see where we can improve," he said. "Especially in the attacking third, we need to develop that understanding, the combination play and finishing as well.

"You could see that there was a lot of misunderstanding upfront. They need to get their sharpness. They are not yet at their 100 percent. Gnakpa had a slight calf pain, so we had to save him for the future matches."
