Sporting Clube de Goa were unlucky not to have taken full points against Mumbai FC in their opening game of the I-League as they were held to a 1-1 draw at the Balewadi Sports Complex on Saturday.
Oscar Bruzon, the Sporting coach, was understandably displeased given that his side couldn’t make their dominance of possession count as they were wayward with their finishing.
“Matthew Gonsalves was man of the match for my side. All of them played well. There were two reasons why we couldn’t win - The pitch was horrible and should not be allowed to host another match. It was too bumpy which did not suit my team’s style of play. Mumbai FC played very well too. Their style of play suited this match,” he said.
He admitted that his side couldn’t deal with the long balls from the opposition but added that he was pleased with the chances they created.
“I'm very disappointed as we came here to win and get all three points. Now, though we have got the draw and that isn't too bad per se. I'd have loved to go out from this place as the winner. To put it clearly, we fell into their trap and style of play. Substitutions helped us. Mumbai's long balls helped them and that’s where we were put out of rhythm. Nothing lacked in attack. We were excellent. ."
Mumbai FC coach Khalid Jamil was satisfied with his side’s defensive performance and said,” We played very few games in the pre-season. Sporting came well prepared. My attack wasn't up to the mark but the defense was excellent. The pitch did not affect our style of play. It was bad before, but has improved greatly. We can only get better and improve from here."
