Ahead of the Annual General Meeting (AGM) of the state association of Goa, Dempo shared the positive development on Duler Stadium…

There is some good news for football fans in Goa as Duler Stadium in Mapusa will be expanded further by the Goa Football Association (GFA) after getting a stamp of approval from the state government and local municipal council, according to Shrinivas Dempo.

He added that earlier thanks to the government that Tilak Maidan at Vasco was upgraded and the benefits were there for all to see with evening kick-offs for I-League matches which attracted a large audience.

“The facilities at Tilak Stadium in Vasco have also been upgraded thanks to the Government, which resulted in excellent turn out for the I-League matches and this very fact was highly appreciated by even all the outstation I-League clubs,” Dempo told The Herald and added that an artificial turf would be installed outside the Nehru Stadium at Fatorda.

Dempo stated that the GFA plans to ensure that the preparations for national tournaments would be taken even more seriously henceforth which would result in a much improved performance.

“In order to raise the standard of the state teams for various national competitions, efforts are being made to train the teams for a longer period and hence improve the performance. It was our under-16 team that put up an excellent performance before losing in the semi-finals to Orissa in the tie-breaker in Coca Cola Mir Iqbal Hussain Trophy sub-junior Nationals,” he said.

He genuinely acknowledged the concern with regards to poor attendance at the local league games but was quick to add that ideas are in place in order to see a change in the trend.

“We are trying to make the Pro League more attractive so that the number of spectators increases. Poor attendance has affected the gate collection which obviously puts pressure to cope up with expenses for organizing official competitions. We are negotiating with Procam as regards to the renewal of sponsorship for the next three years,” he mentioned.

The Dempo SC chairman also took time to congratulate Churchill Brothers for continuing the Goan supremacy in the I-League with none of the Kolkata teams yet to succeed in winning the competition for almost a decade.

“It is a matter of happiness to the Goan football fraternity. I wish them (Churchill Brothers) all the best for 2013-14,” he concluded.
