Churchill Brothers coach Mariano Dias, who is to attend the All India Football Federation’s (AIFF) Professional License course in Mumbai starting July 8 under the tutelage of India coach Wim Koevermans, believes that it is vital to undergo a formal training in coaching.
He mentioned that such schooling shall help the players as well given that they will be trained under coaches who use the right methodology.
"I will be in Mumbai to attend the Pro-Licence course from 8 to 28 July. It's a four module course," he told Goal.
"Without education you cannot do anything. So without coaching education also you cannot expect the grassroots to develop. You cannot rely on the past when it comes to coaching. Everywhere you go, there are so many [coaching] licenses," he added.
The AIFF have pressed on and implemented a rule which would not allow a coach or a technical director without Asian Football Confederation’s (AFC) ‘A’ coaching license to sit in the dugout during an I-League match starting the 2014-15 season.
Despite his club's technical director Sukhwinder Singh not holding any such degree or licence, the Goan remained firm on his statement of the need for coaches to have proper qualifications in their field.
"If you don't know the 'ABCD' of football how can you teach the players how to write a sentence in football,” Dias questioned.
"If we got a system in place, with qualified coaches right from the grassroots, we will see Indian football developing in the next 10 years or so."
The Red Machines are set to begin with their pre-season at the Chowgule grounds in Margao under the watchful eyes of their technical director starting July 8.
While Churchill have roped in defender Eurípedes Amoreirinha and attacking midfielder Hugo Machado from Portugal and have reinstated striker Henry Antchouet from last season, they are yet to sign an Asian player and Dias spoke on the same stating, “We will sign our Asian player during the pre-season. We will be calling a few players for trials.”
