Bikash Mukherjee, the match commissioner of the ill-fated Prayag United versus Mohun Bagan tie in the Calcutta Football League (CFL), has stated that Karim Bencherifa hasn’t made any racist remarks towards the match officials of the said game on Sunday.
It was earlier alleged that the Moroccan was guilty of using racially abusive language at the end of the game. The incident in question took place when Karim went to shake the hands of the referee after the game had ended in a 3-0 win to the Mariners. The former Salgaocar coach used some colourful language at referee Ranjit Bakshi which resulted in a fracas.
“In my opinion, Bencherifa didn’t make any racist remark. Yes, he was guilty of using abusive and filthy language. The referee responded to him stating whether it was his culture to abuse. Bencherifa minced no words to respond back with another set of abusive words. I have reported the matter to the state association,” Mukherjee told Goal.
Bencherifa meanwhile did apologize for his verbal assault on the referees and regretted his behavior where he lost his cool in the heat of the moment.
