The Kolkata club qualified for the I-League top flight and have already identified some big names to add to their squad for next season....

Mohammedan Sporting earned themselves a spot in the 2013-14 I-League season only last week. The Kolkata club are busying themselves with plans to improve the squad for the league next year to ensure that they do have a good season in the top flight. Officials have plans to build a squad within a budget of 10-12 crores by investing on players who have already been on the Indian football scene for some time now.

“We’re looking mainly at a good mix of experienced and young players,” club president Sultan Ahmed said to the Telegraph, on Tuesday. Mohammedan players, one of the oldest football clubs in India, were rewarded by the club with a cheque for Rs 10 lakh by the club president. West Bengal sports minister Madan Mitra also announced a Rs 10 lakh cash reward to the club.

Former Prayag United coach Sanjoy Sen, who coached the side, submitted a list of players who he believes can keep the club competitive. Names such as Pune FC’s James Moga, Prayag’s Kayne Vincent, Mohun Bagan’s Syed Rahim Nabi and Jewel Raja are said to be some of those whom Sen wants in his roster.

“I’ve given a list of players, who I feel, will come in handy in the I-League. Importantly, current form should be taken into account while roping in a player,” confirmed Sen.

“We also wanted someone like (Yusif) Yakubu. But the coach is more intent on going for youngsters,” said a club official to The Telegraph.

“Regarding the foreign recruits, we’ll try for those that already have a fair idea and experience of the conditions here,” the official added.

Sporting are all set to retain captain Alfred Jaryan and may continue with defender Charles Dzisah, while Korean Wi Hyojin and Moroccan Mohammed Younus will be released in all probability.

The coach however remained non-committal on whether he would remain at the club. “My son will be appearing for his Class X examination. So I need at least another week’s time to assess my priorities,” said the trainer.
