The Goan has looked on his way out for a while, but his exit is virtually confirmed, after he confided to his playing staff about his decision to part ways with the club...
Derrick Pereira’s reign at Pune FC is set to end this summer, with the former Mahindra United coach revealing to his players that he is set to return to Goa, after finishing off this campaign with the Red Lizards.
While the Pune based outfit have not won any major trophy under the tutelage of the former Vasco coach, the club are currently second in the I-League table, a position which, if they hold on to, would be their best ever finish since qualifying for the top tier of Indian football.
However the club management and the coach himself, decided to part ways with a mutual agreement, after their title challenge went off-the-rails, signaling another season without any silverware at the club, which prides itself over its professionalism.
With the contract of several key players coming to an end, this could well be a summer full of changes for the Red Lizards, as many members of the playing staff are still in the dark with regards to an extension, and have started looking at other options.
“Yes, Derrick confirmed to us, that he would be leaving at the end of this season. The players don’t know who will come in next season as they (the club management), is doing everything secretly," informed a Pune FC player to Goal.com.
The player in question, who spoke on the condition of anonymity, also revealed that Pereira would join Salgaocar FC, however another of his colleagues, while accepting that the 50 year old was on his way out, could not confirm where he is going. He stated, “Yes, he (Pereira), confirmed that he would leave at the end of the season. However I do not know where he is headed, though logically speaking, it is likely to be Salgaocar.”
