The Bollywood icon has agreed to be the face of the Sikkim club who are currently involved in the relegation struggle in their debut season in the I-League....In India, the stereotype is that only two commodities sell, Bollywood and cricket. The state of the Beautiful Game in the country has always been something that must be pitied thanks to the poor coverage, infrastructure and laid back attitude of the officials. With football clubs looking to Bollywood and cricket superstars to act as brand ambassadors in the hope of drawing crowds to matches, it seems the only way forward.
United Sikkim have done precisely that by roping in Bollywood icon Ranbir Kapoor as the club’s brand ambassador. Bhaichung Bhutia, co-owner of the Sikkim based club was ecstatic over the development. “We are proud to unveil Ranbir Kapoor as our brand ambassador. We have known each other for quite some time. He is a keen follower of football,” said Bhaichung to The Times of India on Tuesday.
The former India captain suggested a proposal to the actor to be the club’s brand ambassador during the charity football match between actors and cricket players which was held in New Delhi last Saturday.
Ranbir, who is self-proclaimed fan of Spanish giants Barcelona, was invited as a special invitee of club president Sandro Rosell to watch the El Clasico match between Barcelona and Real Madrid in October and even had a chance to speak to Lionel Messi.
With United Sikkim in dire straits in the league as they look to avoid relegation in their debut season in the top flight, the club’s new ambassador got into his stride quickly by sending the team a video message wishing them luck in their fight for survival.
“He has wished the team good luck and success in the video message,” informed Baichung.
United Sikkim’s move to bring in Ranbir might just provoke other clubs to undertake similar ventures as they look to increase popularity of the game in the country.
