The former Vasco and Mahindra United man was on the scoresheet against Dempo in a 2-0 win over for Pune FC over the Golden Eagles....For a player, a goal irrespective of the time and place is a special moment. If that goal helps the team to win, it becomes all the more worth the effort. Pune FC's Sukhwinder Singh was someone who experienced this feeling when he scored an absolute scorcher against Dempo SC in a 2-0 win for Pune FC.
“Firstly I would like to thank God and thanks to the coach (Derrick Pereira) for showing confidence in me by putting me in the starting XI. It was a gift from God. The team was compact today and put in a lot of hard work and the result was a sign of that," said Sukhwinder.
The midfielder has not seen much gametime this season and has found it difficult to nail a starting berth.
“I had injuries and was on the bench. The team was set according to the coach’s game plan then. He made a new plan during the break and felt I was fit, so he gave me a chance," said the midfielder.
It is of course a no-brainer that a goal can do wonders to a player's confidence, especially for one who is coming back from injury.
“If a player gets a goal and plays well, his confidence is definitely up. He will be in the same mood ahead of the games in the future. I would like to perform like today for the upcoming games," said the former Vasco SC man.
The win over Dempo has ended a rut that the Maharashtra side were in the middle of and sets them nicely as the league approaches its home stretch.
"We have to work hard for the remaining 7-to-8 matches in the league. There is a marginal difference between all the teams competing for the title. We have to go all out. If we win the remaining matches we can certainly win the league," opined the 30-year old.
The former Mahindra United man is no stranger to scoring spectacular goals. Sukhwinder had once scored a similar goal for Mahindra United against Dempo back in 2008 which also resulted in a win for his team.
“To shoot is my job and whether it goes into the goal or not is God’s work," quipped Singh.
Pune FC is one of the best supported sides in the I-League with a sizeable crowd during every game. The midfielder was thankful for the fans' support and also said that as long as there was support of that magnitude, his team could beat anyone.
