thumbnail Hello,

The Salgaocar FC official discussed the benefits of not having relegation in the I-League for the next few years...

Raj Gomes, the general secretary of Salgaocar FC remarked that the proposed 4-year relegation freeze in the I-League will benefit Indian football in the long run.

Just after the All India Football Federation (AIFF) announced that the new franchisee based clubs that were to enter the I-League next season would be free from relegation for three years, the existing lot want a share of that pie too when they suggested that the league should be relegation free in its next four editions.

“The AIFF have decided to introduce two new teams in the next I-League. Those teams will improve their infrastructure in the next 5 years. They have the assurance of not getting relegated for the first three seasons. We also want something similar to improve our condition," Gomes told Goal.com.

Raj Gomes, who was unanimously selected the president of 'I-League Professional Football Clubs Association' (IPFCA) in 2012 also mentioned that a plan for the same needs to be worked upon.

“We need to devise the plan. It has not been fully chalked out yet. We need to discuss with the other club officials about it. Then only this can be implemented.”

If relegation is done away with for the next few years, it shall surely be unfair to second division teams as they would have no opportunity to make it into the top division. Gomes, however claimed that they will consider all possible aspects before finalizing the plan.

“We don’t have anything against the second division clubs. Definitely there should be avenues open for them. All these aspects will be discussed in the next meeting of IPFCA. Our perspective is towards the betterment of the game in India," he said.

Gomes once again expressed his concern that the clubs in the I-League have to suffer due to lack of revenue sharing.

“Of course, we should get shares of the earnings. Till date, we have only spent money. Now, we need to build up our own infrastructure. We need to take one thing at a time and improve as soon as possible.”

With the I-League resuming in a few days after a long break, the Salgaocar official seemed hopeful about his team’s performance and avoiding the drop.

“We will try our best. I am hopeful that this leg will be better for us and we retain our place in the top flight. Our aim will be to gather as many points as possible from the remaining matches”, he signed off.
