Shillong Lajong FC visited the SOS Children's Village in their hometown over the weekend and interacted with the kids, as part of the community development programme.

"SOS Village" is a non-governmental international development organisation with an aim to focus on the needs of the children, especially those who are abandoned, destitute and orphaned to whom family-based child care is provided.

Most of the children in the SOS Village are living without their biological families because of parental separation, domestic violence and neglect, or diseases like AIDS, etc.

The organisation helps the kids recover from being emotionally traumatised or being isolated, abused, exploited and deprived of their rights.

General Manager of Shillong Lajong FC, Ashley Dkhar said, “It was very good to see the players interacting with the children during the visit. The players as well as the management got to know and understand about their day-to-day routines.

“The kids and their caretakers were thrilled and excited to meet us and spend time with the Lajong team. The administrators of the establishment expressed their immense gratitude and was heartening to see the bonding and special connection between the players and the children,” Dkhar added.

Assistant Director of SOS Village, S. Ahmed was pleased to welcome the club. He observed the gesture as an opportunity for the children to meet their local football stars which would act as an inspiration for all the kids in the establishment. Ahmed highlighted the fact that it was a noble and voluntary gesture from the club and hoped that many other teams in the I-League would also follow in the same path.

Shillong Lajong wants to contribute to the society and have promised to continue to strive in its efforts to grasp any opportunity to be involved in social programs across the north east region.
